Record Medicare Fraud Bust: 94 Physicians, Assistants, and Executives Charged

Friday morning, Attorney General Eric Holder and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced “the largest federal health care fraud takedown in our nation’s history.” The total dollar amount of the fraud was over a quarter of a billion dollars. Geographically, the schemes ranged from Brooklyn to Miami and from Detroit to Baton Rouge. Each city is home to a unit of the Medicare Fraud Strike Force, a joint initiative between HHS and DoJ founded last year (the Brooklyn and Baton Rouge units were added earlier this year). Just over a year ago, more than 50 individuals were arrested in what was heretofore the largest healthcare fraud round-up. According to DoJ, the individuals charged in Friday’s raid included “physicians, medical assistants, and health care company owners and executives.”
