Further demonstrating her commitment to fighting healthcare fraud, U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance announced today the guilty plea of Kimberly Perrin to healthcare fraud, wire fraud, and tax fraud involving nearly $1.2 million embezzled from the Simon-Williamson Clinic in Birmingham, Alabama. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lloyd Peeples — who has been responsible for the office’s most high-profile healthcare convictions and settlements in recent years — prosecuted the case. This is the third healthcare fraud victory since Vance was confirmed by the Senate as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama and the fourth in an investigation led by Peeples this year alone, following the record civil settlement with SouthernCare Hospice in January. In cooperation with Frohsin & Barger through a qui tam whistleblower lawsuit filed by the firm, Peeples uncovered the largest hospice fraud in U.S. history and secured the largest qui tam settlement ever in Alabama, recovering nearly $25 million in taxpayer funds.
